When the Righteous are in Authority

July 11, 2015Dale Ebel

“When the righteous are in authority the people rejoice.” – Proverbs 29:2

The current condition of our government and country is, in large measure, simply a reflection of its people, what they value, and what they will tolerate. If we desire to be a God-fearing nation our action, or more accurately the lack thereof, will be a determining factor in the kind of government we either enjoy or must then endure. Perhaps President James A. Garfield (a Christian minister during the national revival known as the Second Great Awakening) succinctly articulated this truth when he reminded Americans:

“Now, more than ever before, the people are responsible for the character of their Congress. If that body be ignorant, reckless, and corrupt, it is because the people tolerate ignorance, recklessness and corruption. If it be intelligent, brave and pure, it is because the people demand these high qualities to represent them in the national legislature. If the next centennial does not find us a great nation with a great and worthy congress, it will be because those who represent the enterprise, the culture and the morality of the nation do not aid in controlling the political force.” (The works of James Garfield 1883, Taken from The Founders Bible page 991.)
