On October 26, 2018 I wrote a teaching on Matthew 5:17. Probably this verse and Romans 10:4 are two of the most misunderstood and misused verses in the New Testament.
[Please CLICK HERE to read my teaching on October 26th before you read the following article]“For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.” – Romans 10:4 NASB
The word for “end” (the Greek telos) is used forty-two times in the New Testament, and thirty-seven times it’s interpreted as “goal.” Five times it is interpreted as “fulfill,” all of which strongly suggests that it does not mean “end” or “termination” in this setting.
“End” is best to be understood as: “focus” or “goal.” Thus, the above verse would be more correctly rendered as “The whole purpose of Torah (i.e., the ‘law’) is to lead you to Yeshua (Jesus), so you can achieve true righteousness through Him.” Yeshua, was the name given to Christ by His Hebrew parents at His birth.
Furthermore, Yeshua, Himself tells us precisely when the law will be terminated in the passage from the fifth chapter of Matthew: “For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law (Torah) until all is accomplished” (Matthew 5:18).
Most assuredly this doesn’t sound like something that happened when Jesus Christ died on the cross, yet that is what is taught in many churches today. On the contrary, this passage references a time after the completion of the thousand-year reign of Christ on planet earth.
The Founders’ Bible is so powerful because David Barton communicates truths from both the Law the Old Testament, and the New Testament without making unnecessary delineations between the two. As a result, the articles from the Founders’ Bible equip us with God’s view of how we can integrate the whole Bible into our personal and public lives. The biblical concepts he writes about are germane for us to understand so that we can address the issues facing the broader culture. As I have said many times before we must become “macro” (larger) in our application of Scripture rather than continuing with a “micro” (small) privatized view of the Holy Scriptures.
As a reminder, the word “Law” is best translated, “instruction”, or “teaching.” The Torah is God’s training manual for life. It is His orientation course in His will and His ways.
