“Sing unto Him a new song: play skillfully with a loud noise” – Psalm 33:3
This is the first of nine references in the Bible to a “new song.” Appropriately, Psalm 33 is a song which deals with the earliest events of creation and is the first psalm which does so.
It is packed full of the grandest themes. Right off the bat there is the assertion that “the word of the LORD” is always right, and the “works” of the LORD are always of truth (33:4). To those with eyes to see and hearts to believe (v.5), His righteousness and goodness are evident everywhere. This psalm also speaks of the awesome truth that God’s creation took place simply by His mighty Word, “the breath of His mouth.” We know from John 1:1-14, that Jesus Christ is the “Word” of God and that Christ spoke and, “by Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible…” – Colossians 1:16
The psalmist goes on in verse 11 to describe the reality that God does not change though new years come and go, and that He will keep speaking His thoughts to all future generations.
Pause for a moment to deeply consider verses 14 and 15.
Vs. 14 “He looks upon all.” God sees all; He is omnipresent.
Vs. 15 “He fashions.” God forms all; He is omnipotent.
Vs. 15 “He considers.” God understands all; He is omniscient.
As we walk through the days and months of 2015 we are under the watchful eye of Yahweh Roi (God Who Sees) as we “fear Him,” “hope in His mercy” (vs. 18), and “wait for Him” as He is “our help and shield” (vs. 20).
Happy New Year!
